The measure of the rms values of the harmonics with respect to the fundamental is called “THD”.

  • Total Harmonic Distortion of current THDi in %.

THDi = 100 x (sqrt( (iH2)2+ (iH3)2 + (iH4)2 +…+ (iHn)2 ) ) / iH1

  • Total Harmonic Distortion of current THDv in %.

THDv = 100 x (sqrt( (vH2)2+ (vH3)2 + (vH4)2 +…+ (vHn)2 ) ) / vH1

  • Total Harmonic Distortion of voltage THDv in %.

Individual Harmonic Distortion HDi(%) = 100 x ( Hi / H1 )

  • Linear Loads:-
    A linear load is a load that generates a current waveform identical to the input voltage waveform. In other words, a load is said to be linear when the current drawn has the same waveform as the voltage across its terminals.

    Non-linear Loads:-
    A non-linear load is a load that generates a current waveform which is not following the voltage waveform. In other words, a load is said to be non-linear when the relation between the current and voltage is non-linear.

    E.g. When a sinusoidal voltage is applied and the loads draw non-sinusoidal current then it is said that the load is a non-linear load.

    Examples of Non-linear loads:-
    1. Discharge lamps.
    2. Fluorescent Lamps.
    3. Video Monitor
    4. Computer Hardware.
    5. Variable Drives.
    6. AC/DC Converters, etc.

    CONSEQUENCES OF NON-LINEAR LOADS:-
    – Increase in distortion on the distribution systems.
    – High current in system neutral.
    – Increase in current carrying conductor size.
    – Derating of power source, transformer, and distribution network.
    – Malfunctioning of protective devices due to the unpredictable nature of system current.
